I was perusing the art listings on ebay, as I do from time to time. I found the usual copy-cat works of those who sell well (you know the ones) and the 6 millionth painting of a tree (some are quite beautiful; some…not so much). But in my travels I found quite astonishing…

No photos, poor listing details, no templates, etc.! Can you believe in this day and age, and this economy that some artists would even try to list their art without a well-designed templates, LOTS of photos and details about everything involved (artist, location, shipping, etc.). This astounded me.

I clicked on some of the listings (actually looking to buy something interesting because as an artist, I’m kind of sick of my own work) and at least three listings didn’t include photos beyond the standard freebie ebay gives you. No templates, no photos, no “up close details,” nothing! They did list some details in small Times New Roman font all crammed together (please…don’t do this).

Naturally I didn’t delve further into this as a buying proposition because, for one thing, I’m thinking “Why should I invest money in someone who cannot be bothered with the details?” As a seller of art on ebay and other areas on the internet I know full-well that a well-designed listing is part of the package. It’s your marketing tool!

So…if you’re listing on ebay without lots of photos and well-written and edited copy, don’t hold your breath for a sale unless your work and your prices are absolutely incredible AND you’ve got tons of good feedback. I’m sorry, but lazy just won’t cut it these days. If you’re going to take the time and pay the money to list on ebay with the THOUSANDS of other listings, do yourself a favor and either make it pop or skip it entirely.

Another tip is to NOT COPY OTHERS! I couldn’t believe how incredibly bored I’ve been lately looking at the pages and pages of art. I used to marvel and be envious of the art I saw on ebay, but now I’m lucky if I see two things on one listing page that are unique, interesting, well marketed and speak to me. Of course, my taste may vary from another and that’s really not the point here. The point is: Don’t copy others. It’s obvious and looks kind of desperate. Just because they had success selling a certain style doesn’t mean you will, too.

Now in all fairness, I have tried to copy others before. I think newbie artists always do, but I only did it a couple of times and it was never right. It never felt right because it wasn’t me…it was someone else. I found out quickly how useless it is. I also found out how hollow it made me feel. It wasn’t like when I created something I loved; it was a shallow feeling.

Please create unique, interesting and personalized art and don’t fall into the trap of painting like someone else just because people seem to like it and buy it. After awhile it all starts to look like the back walls of Pier One…don’t you hate walking in there and seeing all that hashed out “popular wall art”? It makes my blood boil!

Another tip I have found that works is to send an email to my past customers whenever I list something new in a style they like. I make it a generalized email and include photos and links to my site(s), etc. I’ve gotten a decent amount of interest in art that way. So if you do sell art, be sure to collect the emails and send out mailers to customers. Always give them the choice to opt-out and not get them. Let them know you’re emailing them as a valuable customer. Something else I do is offer “VIP” discounts and specials to those who have bought before.

I sent out a HARO inquiry for marketing tips from artists and here is my recent experience with guest bloggers.

These were fellow artists who I requested send me a little helpful marketing post about what works for them. I got a few wonderful posts (see them below) but… I also got a few who (I guess) have no clue as to how to guest blog or provide helpful info.
(And yes, I made clear in the request how their info would be used and posted.)

These guests included the ever-popular promo-only “I’m great” submissions (I didn’t ask for an ad or press release) and the “I don’t really know what to say” submissions (yes, they actually spent time writing that they didn’t know what to write!)

But the main trouble with this whole experience was the fact that although I carefully read and credited anyone who submitted good info, people (and I mean a LOT of them) wrote and asked if I could make this change and that update and even had the gall to ask to change the name on the submission!

I mean…really? Shouldn’t you check, double-check and check again things that you submit for print and publicity (because let’s face it, that’s the real reason anyone does most anything these day … to get noticed, right?). When I guest blog for others, I’m clear about what it means and what I should submit and I’ve gotten some great posts from friendly people who were grateful. I didn’t change content, but I made any tiny glaring errors already.

I’m grateful for the time people took to submit (don’t get me wrong). I just didn’t intend on making it an editing project after the fact. Just writing to let you know what to expect if you venture down the same lane!

Cheers…and thanks for letting me vent!

No, it doesn’t necessarily. In today’s culture, very little does. To get noticed and remembered, you have to use words to convey a bit. Sure, some art does say all it needs to, but with all the “clutter” in the world, why not tell your audience a little about the work itself?

It’s not an invitation to yammer on and on about why and how you became an artist (yawn). But knowing a little about you and the work can make you seem more real to your buyers (especially if you sell online). And people buy from people they can relate to…so, relate a little!

“One of the most important things for a start-up artist is developing a reputation for him/herself; in business terms, this means a brand. You can do this online by creating a good looking and useful biography website and also be present on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. As in life, online you have to network with people; now networking is very accessible trough social media, and artists should take advantage of that.

In parallel marketing yourself in day-to-day life is extremely important as well. As a musician, it is always important to hunt for as many gigs as possible, so more and more people hear what you have to offer. It is also best at the beginning to be open to any collaborations with other artists; this allows you to meet people that could help your career.

Overall it is important to use every tool around you to get exposure and build up your reputation. This, if done right, mixed with your talent, could go a long way.”

Although I’ve been an artist for many years, I’m just beginning to sell my work commercially. This year two things that happened which really solidified my reputation and that are starting to open doors for me are:

1. Apply for, and being accepted as, an Illinois Artisan. This is through the Illinois State Museum Artisans Program (therefore state run), and apparently only about 1/3 of those that apply get accepted, so it’s quite an honor. My fiber art is now for sale in one of their stores. A couple of weeks ago I received a signup form for all the events they put on next year at their stores throughout the state and I’m hoping to get on their schedule to demonstrate my fiber art in person. One of their stores is in downtown Chicago. That would be great exposure for any artist!

2. Signing up for online groups and RSS feeds from related suppliers, artists, bloggers, etc. led me to C &T Publishing in California (art &craft book publishers). As part of their own marketing program, they were looking for “Surface Design Ambassadors” which is my niche area, and they are building a database of artists who are willing to teach surface design. Since I already teach surface design at my local community college, this is a natural fit. I would not have found this opportunity had I not been “plugged in” to an online group.
